A warm home is the perfect sanctuary from the cold, dry outdoors, especially if your humidifier has been hard at work. But if the humidifier lives in your air ducts, there is a chance that mold spores reside there as well.
In-duct humidifiers and mold
While not all in-duct humidifiers can cause mold, they increase the likelihood of mold spores developing in your air ducts. Mold grows in humid areas, so if an in-duct humidifier is set above 45% your ducts could be at risk for mold. Even if you don’t have your in-duct humidifier set that high, moisture can get trapped by dust and debris in your ducts and condense on the walls of your air ducts, promoting mold growth.
Once mold is in your air ducts, it can easily spread. Whenever you turn on the furnace or air conditioning, mold spores can get blown out of your ductwork and end up on other surfaces in your home. If the mold lands in areas in your home with high moisture concentration, like in bathrooms or windows covered in condensation, the mold can start to grow outside of your air ducts and be even harder to remove. Long term exposure could lead to aggravation of mold allergies, prolonged cold symptoms, and in the case of toxic molds, serious medical conditions like memory loss and muscle cramps can occur.
